Electropolishing
At Southern Stainless, we deliver precision electropolishing using advanced in-house electrochemical processing technology.
We specialise exclusively in electropolishing stainless steel, including 316 grade, ensuring optimal corrosion resistance, surface smoothness, and hygienic performance.
Capability Snapshot
Electropolishing removes a controlled microscopic layer of stainless steel through an electrochemical process — eliminating surface impurities and smoothing micro-peaks for a clean, bright, corrosion-resistant finish.
Dedicated stainless steel electropolishing facility
Bath size: 4m (L) x 950mm (W) x 1.7m (D)
Double-dip capability for components over 4m
Improved corrosion resistance and passivation
Microscopically smooth, hygienic surface finish
Our Electropolishing Facility
Our in-house electropolishing system features a dedicated stainless steel electrochemical processing bath installed at our Ormeau facility.
System capabilities:
Bath size: 4m(L) × 950mm(W) × 1.7m(D)
Stainless steel only (including 316 grade)
Controlled electrochemical processing for uniform material removal
Double-dip capability for components exceeding 4 metres
Suitable for fabricated assemblies and complex geometries
For items longer than 4 metres, we can “double dip.”
Please note a slight variation in sheen may occur at the overlap area.
Why Choose Electropolishing?
Superior Corrosion Resistance
Removes surface contaminants to maximise the natural corrosion resistance of stainless steel.
Hygienic Surface Optimisation
Eliminates microscopic peaks and surface irregularities, reducing bacteria adhesion, product build-up, and contamination risk.
Salt-Resistant, Easy-Clean Surface
Creates a low-friction, non-directional finish that significantly decreases cleaning time and ongoing maintenance requirements.
Improved Performance & Longevity
Reduces surface drag, fouling, and scaling while maintaining the metal’s grain structure and fatigue strength.
Bright, Uniform Aesthetic Finish
Produces a clean, reflective surface free from abrasive lines, delivering a consistent, high-quality appearance.
Electropolishing vs Mechanical Polishing
Understanding the differences helps ensure the right process is selected for your project.
Mechanical polishing can push non-metallic inclusions deeper into the surface. Electropolishing removes them — increasing tarnish and corrosion resistance while improving hygiene and cleanability.
How It Works
Electropolishing is the reverse of electroplating.
Stainless steel components are immersed in a controlled electrolyte bath and subjected to direct electrical current. The component becomes anodic, and metal is removed uniformly from the surface.
During the process:
A viscous film forms across the surface
Electrical resistance is lowest at microscopic high points
Peaks dissolve faster than valleys
Surface levels out at a microscopic scale
The result is a bright, smooth finish with improved corrosion resistance and reduced surface friction.
For best results, traditional finishing (grinding or polishing) may be completed prior to electropolishing depending on surface condition.
Integrated Manufacturing Solutions
Electropolishing is often the final stage in a complete fabrication workflow.
We integrate electropolishing with:
CNC Press Brake (Folding)
Precision welding
Custom fabrication
Surface finishing
Full assembly solutions
This allows us to control quality from raw material through to final finish — all in-house.
Built and Cut In-House
All electropolishing is performed at our Ormeau facility, centrally located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We proudly service the Gold Coast, Brisbane, South East Queensland, and clients across Australia.
Fully in-house operation
Dedicated stainless steel setup
4-metre bath capacity
Double-dip capability for longer components
For materials exceeding 4 metres, we can “double dip.”
Please note: A slight variation in sheen may occur at the overlap area.
