Advanced Cutting Capability
Our in-house OMAX Maxiem 2040 abrasive waterjet system enables us to cut virtually any material, including:
Stainless steel
Titanium
Aluminium
Brass
Copper
Carbon fibre
Mild steel
Composite materials
We can cut material thicknesses up to 300mm, with accuracy suitable for detailed components and structural applications alike.
Why Choose Waterjet Cutting?
No Heat-Affected Zones
Waterjet cutting is a cold process. There is no thermal distortion, no hardening, and no micro-cracking.
No Post-Treatment Required
Unlike laser-cut stainless steel, waterjet-cut edges do not require chemical treatment or polishing to prevent corrosion.
Superior Detail Capability
Waterjet cutting can cut holes significantly smaller than the plate thickness — for example, a 3mm hole in 20mm plate.
Material & Thickness Versatility
Waterjet cutting adjusts speed to suit the material — enabling consistent results across a broader range of materials.
Clean & Efficient
Minimal waste. Fast turnaround. Environmentally responsible operation.
Waterjet vs Laser Cutting
Understanding the differences helps ensure the right process is selected for your project.
In many applications, waterjet cutting provides greater flexibility and material protection.
How It Works
Abrasive waterjet cutting mixes ultra-high-pressure water with garnet abrasive to create a concentrated, high-velocity stream that erodes the material rather than melting it. Because the process generates no heat, the structural and surface properties of the material remain unchanged.
It is particularly suited to reflective materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, brass and copper — where laser cutting may be less effective.
The cutting speed is adjusted to suit the material type and thickness, allowing for consistent accuracy from thin sheet to heavy plate, including complex profiles and detailed features.
The result is a clean, satin-smooth edge that requires minimal secondary finishing, allowing components to move efficiently into fabrication, folding, welding, or assembly.
Integrated Manufacturing Solutions
Abrasive waterjet cutting is only one part of the process.
At Southern Stainless, components move seamlessly from cutting into folding (CNC press brake), fabrication and welding, polishing and finishing — and through to complete assembly where required.
By managing each stage in-house from our Ormeau facility, we maintain control over quality, accuracy, and lead times. The result is a streamlined production process that reduces handling, improves efficiency, and delivers a finished product ready for installation or deployment.
Built and Cut In-House
All abrasive waterjet cutting is performed at our Ormeau facility, centrally located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. We proudly service the Gold Coast, Brisbane, South East Queensland, and clients across Australia.
Keeping production in-house gives us complete control over quality, scheduling, and delivery. Nothing is outsourced. Every component is cut, inspected, and managed by our team — ensuring consistent standards, clear accountability, and dependable turnaround times.
